DINKELSPIEL STORE (HISTORIC). Historic Marker at site says: The store was built in 1851 and opened for business in 1852 by the Dinkelspiel family, who had recently emigrated from Germany. The buildings were made of rhyolite tuff blocks from the Altaville Quarry. The small adjoining building originally used as a saddle shop. Later became the Wells Fargo Company’s express office. The first Wells Fargo agent in Vallecito was L. Dinkelspiel and Co. It was one of the many express companies which handled mail in the Mother Lode pr.
HISTORICAL MARKER, VALLECITO CHURCH. This historical marker indicates the site of "One of California's important early day mining towns". Gold was discovered here by the Murphy brothers in 1849. The town, originally called "Murphys Old Diggings", was named Vallecito by Mexicans, meaning "little valley". Above the marker is a bell that was cast in Troy NY and brought around the horn. It was erected in an oak tree in 1854 and used to call people together for all purposes.
MOANING CAVERN PARK. Various activities around the large 165 ft-deep cave. Walking tour to bottom of cave takes 45 minutes. Rappel descent (equipment provided). 3-hour adventure trip.
