INFORMATION & HISTORY
OAK GROVE CEMETERY. Historic cemetery. Cemetery Rd, Knights Ferry.
COVERED BRIDGE. The first wooden bridge (replacing a ferry) was built in 1857 upsteam of this site but was destroyed by a flood in 1862. This bridge was built in 1863. It was first a toll bridge, operated privately, but was purchased by the county in 1884. The bridge has wooden planks. Wooden bridges were covered to allow them to resist the cycle of wetting and drying that cracks and weakens the wood of uncovered bridges.
HOOK & LADDER CO. NO. 1 (HISTORIC). A historic firehouse, no longer in use. Sonora Rd, Knights Ferry.
INDIAN MONUMENT. This piece of a tree with a metal salmon and feathers of a bird memorializes the local Indians. Tribes and villages along the river northeast of Knights Ferry were mostly Me-Wuks, while those to the west were mostly Yokuts.
INFORMATION BOARD. This information board displays a daily posting of the flow of the river in CFS (cubic feet per second). The board also has a map of the Stanislaus River, from Goodwin Dam to its confluence with the San Joaquin River. The board has information about facilities near the river and safety information for rafters. Near the board are picnic tables and grilles. Park hours are 6am-sunset. Stanislaus River Park.
MASONIC LODGE (HISTORIC). Was previously a lodge of the Masons fraternal order. Ellen St, Knights Ferry.
MILLSTONES. The photo here shows the remains of one of the millstones on display. The wooden overhang is to protect the millstone. After the first flour mill was washed out in an 1862 flood, David Tulloch rebuilt the mill with five sets of stones, about 4 feet in diameter, made in Belgium. The grinding surfaces were grooved and each stone was made of several pieces of granite cemented together and contained in an iron hoop that can seen in the photo.
OLD MILL OFFICE. This stone and wooden building was built about 1854 by David Locke, who built the first flour mill. It served as an office and residence for about the next 100 years. When the mill was converted to a hydroelectric power plant, the plant manager lived here.
PARK & HISTORIC MARKER.
POWER PLANT RUINS. These ruins were originally a flour mill established in 1863 but converted in 1899 to a hydroelectric power plant. Water was fed through a pipe to a turbine that spun as the result of the water rushing through it. The turbine was connected to an electricity generator. Historic Structure, Stanislaus River Park.
ABRAHAM SCHELL HOUSE (HISTORIC). Home of Abraham Schell, who owned a 275 acre vineyard in the area. Ellen St., Knights Ferry. (private residence).
KNIGHTS FERRY INFORMATION CENTER. This information center has staff who can answer questions and has a small museum and a large-screen video that shows videos on request. The museum has exhibits on geology, types of rocks, local animals, birds, and plants, the Gold Rush, the history of the Stanislaus River, the role of the river in water supply, and salmon runs. It has impressive stuffed animals (a bobcat, salmon, beaver, mountain lion, and coyote), skulls of some animals, and animal fur pelts that you can feel. Stanislaus River Park.
